all about coaching with Cranston Cognition

A catalyst for change

Coaching is an extremely powerful tool in enhancing the performance of individuals and teams. The coaching process will focus on the goals to be achieved, examine the current situation and draw upon experience to set out a clear plan of action backed by commitment and support.

Coaching is an inter-disciplinary skillset that owes much to psychology β€” it’s about questioning, motivating, clarifying, challenging, empathising and goal-setting. These are the tools of the accomplished coach.

The core characteristics of coaching:

  • It consists of one-to-one developmental discussions
  • It provides people with feedback on their strengths and what they could do more of
  • It is aimed at specific issues and looks to the future
  • It is a relatively short-term activity ranging from one to eight sessions
  • It is essentially a non-directive form of development
  • It focuses on improving performance and developing and enhancing individuals' existing skills and resources
  • It is used to address a wide range of issues
  • Coaching activities have both organisational and individual goals
  • It assumes that the individual is psychologically healthy and does not require a clinical intervention
  • It works on the premise that clients can achieve self-awareness and the ability to reflect.

Coaching is a positive, capability-building and empowering exercise. Coaching is neutral and sets aside personal opinions, it offers long term solutions to make enduring changes. It  focuses on important goals and the right behaviours.

A coach's job is to help clients articulate their dreams, desires and aspirations; help to clarify their mission, beliefs and values, purpose and goals, and find the resources within themselves to help them achieve that outcome in any area of life β€” personal, professional or relationship.

Professional Coaching is not counseling, therapy or consulting. It does not focus on examining nor diagnosing the past, instead it focuses on effecting change in a client's current and future behaviour.

Coaching has a variety of applications and can help with the following:
